Red Bull Mobile Data: Affordable mobile internet connection abroad
1. Foreword
Within the EU, the Fair Use Policy applies to the use of your smartphone and mobile tariff abroad. This means you can browse and make calls in other EU countries under the same conditions as at home for up to four months.
Outside the EU, roaming charges are generally very high. Many mobile providers offer additional packages, usually bookable via SMS, to reduce costs slightly. However, these options are often expensive and can quickly lead to significant charges.
An alternative is to purchase a prepaid SIM card from a local provider. This can, however, be time-consuming and may prove challenging due to language barriers.
In this knowledge article, we introduce the Red Bull Mobile Data app, available for Apple iPhone and Android smartphones. After installation, account registration, and eSIM setup, you can use the service. This solution offers the following advantages over other options:
- A single, trustworthy provider (powered by A1 Austria)
- Available in almost all parts of the world
- Relatively affordable prepaid rates
- Easy and quick setup
- Invoice export as a PDF
For these reasons, Vega IT recommends using this app or service for your business trips. The prerequisites you need to meet and the steps required for setup and usage are described below.
Note: This guide refers to the app version for Apple iPhone devices; however, the procedure should be almost identical for Android-based smartphones.
2. Important Requirements and Information
To use the app and service, your smartphone must support the installation of an eSIM. If you already have an eSIM from another provider registered, ensure that there is still a slot available for setting up the RB Mobile Data eSIM. Apple iPhones, starting with the newer SE models, generally support at least two eSIMs. For all other smartphones, please check the manufacturer's website for information.
To purchase a plan, an internet connection is required, meaning you should activate the desired package before your trip.
The purchased data package is valid for 1 month from the time of purchase.
Reference value for data usage: With extensive use (email, messenger), you can expect a consumption of approximately 200 - 500 MB per day. However, if the smartphone is also used as a hotspot for a notebook or similar devices, consumption will be significantly higher. It is recommended to limit work to essential tasks and ideally use Wi-Fi at the branch office or in the hotel.
As of December 2024, the accepted payment methods are either a credit card or a PayPal account .
You can use the app to access a receipt as a PDF. If you pay using your private account, you can claim the costs incurred from your employer by presenting the invoice, e.g. via the travel or receipt expense statement. Please make sure, however, that you enter your profile data correctly when setting up the app in order to get the costs reimbursed. To be on the safe side, ask the relevant department to avoid problems. For example, for employees at the company headquarters in Wals-Siezenheim, it is necessary to enter the ATU number in brackets after the company name in the Company field, i.e. the field must read Vega International Car Transport & Logistic-Trading Ges.m.b.H. (ATU33914501)
In the app menu under Profile > Settings, you can also enter promo codes : Just Google for them! If you find any, enter the code in the app and benefit from free data volume.
To avoid accidental, expensive usage of your primary SIM card, we recommend disabling the data option for it in the device settings or setting the Red Bull Mobile Data eSIM as the default for mobile data usage. On iPhones, for example, you can find this option under Mobile Data in the Settings menu.
Please note that the use of certain IT services, such as email access and VPN login, is restricted to countries where Vega has offices for security reasons. If you travel to another country, please inform the IT department so that a temporary exception for this so-called geo-blocking can be set up during your stay abroad.
3. Setting Up and Using the Red Bull Mobile Data App
Setting it up is very simple and quick:
